Beetle Drive 2012
The first Social event of 2012 was a Beetle Drive which was organised by Captain Florence.
Thirty - nine ladies came along. We play the game and then have supper and it is usually great fun and noisy!! This year was no exception. In fact I was enjoying myself so much that I forgot to take more than the few pictures before play began ... for that I apologise.
Florence had the tables all set out for us; instructions, score cards, pencils, and dice so all we
had to do was be ready for the bell to begin. As you see on the right, Maureen, Joan and Helena (who was the winner) are waiting in anticipation.

As were Evie, Elaine, Fiona and Doreen (with her strapped up fingers) ...

... and Sylvia, Linda, Carol and Karen.
Christmas Dinner and Pantomime 2011
As part of fund raising for the Lady Captain’s chosen charity, Radio Lollipop at Yorkhill Children's Hospital. Margaret Murphy raffled an original painting donated by artist friend Ella McKerrow.
The work was of an avenue of trees at Mugdock country park and was familiar to many of us who walk there with, or without, a dog. A big thank you to Margaret whose efforts (you have bought a ticket haven’t you? No? Well you can now!) accumulated £200.
As tickets had been sold to friends outwith the club it was possible that one of them could win it but no, out came Pat Hutton’s ticket and so she is now the pro
ud owner of this very fine artwork. You can see by the smiles from Florence, Pat and Margaret how pleased they were.
Thanks are due to Madelaine who donated prizes for another raffle. They were baskets of Christmas Fare that were beautifully presented in cellophane and ribbon and the winners of these fine prizes were delighted.
After a delicious meal prepared and served by the Caddyshack staff it was time for the Pantomime, written and produced by our very own, highly respected, Irene McLennan.
This year it was an adaptation of Scheherazade – she was a legendary Persian Queen and the storyteller of One Thousand and One Nights. To keep herself alive she told the King an exciting story every night but didn’t finish it so he spared her life until the next night. This continued for 1001 nights....
Enter sharp Sultana, a fiery little shrew, a golfer with a pedigree; she plays off thirty-two. Sultana is looking for a partner to play with in the Winter Foursomes,
There’s no one who’s quite good enough to play along with me!
I’m searching for a partner, I audition every day,
I’ve tried out Gill, Fiona, Anne, but none of them can play.
I’ve got another just outside; I’d like you all to meet her.
Please put your hands together as we welcome Raunchy Rita!
Enter Raunchy Rita raring to be Sultana’s partner and demonstrating her most unusual swing ... come on then am I hired?
Sultana ... I’ve never seen a swing like that! My partner? No! You’re fired!
Sultana tries again ...
It’s time to meet another,
let’s see if she is fabs.
A good old Bearsden welcome please
for good old Bouncy Babs.
Enter Babs with tassles twirling!!
Here I am I’m Bouncy Babs,
My smile is ever ready.
My golfing is improving,
And my swing is fine and steady!
Sultana says ...
I’d like to see your putting style
Babs ... My putting’s much admired ... so am I chosen? – will I do?
Sultana ... I’ve news for you – you’re fired!
For those of you not familiar with the original story ... the King of Persia beheaded all his wives except Scheherazade (see above) so we must draw a comparison between the King and Sultana in her search for the perfect partner for the Winter Foursomes!
Sultana tries again ... Enter Scheherezade
who’s always blithe and merry
and though her name is hard to say
we can call her Sherry.
Sultana ...
Are we to see a version
of that Cuban Dance the Roomba?
Sherry ...
No! this is Bearsden’s version
of that sexy dance called Zoomba!
Sultana ...
So you can dance and you can sing,
Is Golfing on your list?
Sherry ... My golfing really is unique
and never should be missed.
There follows a bit of an argument between
Rita and Babs as to whose swing is better
and of course a Panto wouldn’t be complete
without ... OH NO IT’S NOT! ... OH YES IT IS!
Sultana ...
We’ll have to sort this problem out
Before we end this feast.
We’ll have a competition,
And the Audience can choose.
Each one will swing, they’ll clap who’s best,
And two of you will lose.
And the winner is ... Sherry
Sultana ... I've watched your golfing prowess,
and one showed what is required.
I’ve made my choice! The one that’s best!
My clever girl! You’re Hired!
Sherry ... It's me, I've won I am the best!
Our show is nearly over, and it's time to say good bye, We'll sing a few more verses, to leave you on a high!
We wish you a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year!
Cheers!
Eleven of our new members were there and experienced the fun the Ladies have at Bearsden GC.
Many thanks to Irene and the Players, Frances, Margaret, Barbara & Molly, for their performances, thanks to Captain Florence for organising the evening which was enjoyed by all who attended.
Christmas Market Nov 2011
As the first social event on her calendar Lady Captain Florence Graham chose to organise a Christmas Market.
The proceeds from this evening will go to her chosen charity 'Radio Lollipop' at Yorkhill Children's Hospital.
This Charity is close to her heart as her daughter has been a volunteer on the wards for 6 years. Florence invited several of her crafty friends along to proffer their handmade wares for us to buy to give as Christmas gifts or keep and enjoy ourselves.
Ellie Penny looked very festive with her sparkly dress and table of bright sparkling jewelry. She sold quite a lot judging by how popular her table seemed to be.
Another friend, Isobel Gilmour who makes bobbly bracelets and necklaces as a hobby had supplied these items shown here on the right.
Florence also wanted to have a book stall but did not realise just how many books the ladies would have to recycle as seen in the image.
The trestle table was positively sagging under the weight of them and there were more under the table. There will be plenty left to take to a Charity Shop even after the Gents have had an opportunity to buy some.
Madelaine baked and iced a cake for us to guess the weight of (6lb 4 oz, as far as weight is concerned most of are not metric!) very
festive it looked too. Two ladies guessed
within 1oz (6lb 3oz & 6lb 5oz) and a draw of the 2 names was made and the winner was Joan Bell.
There was plenty of opportunities for us to spend, spend, because as well as the gifts for sale there was a Tombola and a Raffle to which the Ladies had donated bottles and other goodies.
Seventy ladies, members and friends, attended the event which started with a glass of mulled wine and continued later with a Finger Buffet supplied by The Caddy Shack.
In the background Irene Mclennan was tinkling on the ivories and adding to the ambience of the evening. As you can see the lounge was crowded and the buzz
of conversation and laughter filled the air.
All good things must come to an end and it was time for Captain Florence to thank all the Club Members who had helped her and everyone for coming to support her endeavours and for contributing so generously. Over £600 was raised!!
Thankyou Florence for all your hard work and ingenuity that made this event so successful and enjoyable.
Ashbourne Homes 2011
The Trophy was presented to the Ladies Section in 1992 by Ashbourne Homes.
They own Clarence Court Care Home at Broomhill Cross and the Administrator, Activities Manager and one or two Residents usually come to the Club on the afternoon of the Competition to have afternoon tea and present the prizes.
On the left are some of the players waiting to find out who the winners are.
Grace, Gill, Jean, Pat, Marilyn & Elaine.
The original date set for this 12 hole Competition was too wet and a new date had to be arranged.
The winner was Sheila Mumford shown here receiving the Trophy from Activities Manager Steven Boyce.
In second place was Gill Campbell.
Marilyn Clarke received the prize for being third.
Janet Wotton won the Putting Prize, 20 putts (12 hole competition)

Last but not least the dreaded'Hidden Hole' was won by Elaine Thomson.

Ladies' Past Captain's Dinner
The Ladies' Past Captain's Match and Dinner were held on Tuesday, 6th September.
The day dawned dull and blustery and the rains came at 12:00 noon, start time. Only 6 souls braved the elements and played 12 holes.
Later after a wash and brush-up 19 Past Captains arrived at the club house for dinner and congratulations from those who didn't play.
We were treated to a superb repast from the Caddie Shack and then the Cup was presented to Nancy Smith (2000 - 2001).
On the left you see Immediate Past Captain Karen Forbes, who organised the event and Past Captain Elaine Thomson
on either side of winner Nancy Smith who is holding the Trophy which was presented to the Ladies' Section by Mrs A Robertson in 1970.
If you look closely to the right of Nancy's head you can see her name on the Board in the Hall.
It wasn't possible to call all 19 ladies present to order to get a group picture as there was too much chat and fun going on.
2011 Ladies' Outing
Each year the onus falls on the Lady Captain to arrange an outing to another golf course for the day.
This year Christinr Morrison chose Dougalston GC at Esporta in Milngavie so we didn't stray too far from home.
Dougalston GC comes with a reputation of being very long and challenging. The playing distance is, in fact, 280 yards shorter than Bearsden, playing from the Ladies' tees, although the distances from greens to tees is considerably longer and one could easily stray!
The winning team was Lynn McColl, Eleanor Norris & Nancy Smith with a score of 63, Pictured here with the crystal Cochrane Trophy to be shared (4 months each)! They were also presented with pretty china mugs.
We benefitted from the fact that our County Players had already played the course earlier this year although they complained that it took them 5 hours on that occasion. We made slightly better time than that as the format for the day was a Triam (3 ball/best ball) and thus all balls did not have to be played out.
In second place acb were Christine Holt, Anne Nicoll & Mary Freshney with a score of 67. Seen here with their prizes which were potted Begonias.
In third place, also with a score of 67 were Christine Morrison, Gill Campbell & Margaret Cavin who now have bright new white socks to wear.
Twenty ladies took part and we started the day with the customary roll and bacon and ended with a meal of soup and main course of half a chicken and veg!! Although the day started wet and dismal it did improve by the time we took to the course and stayed dry for the duration - the sun does shine on the righteous after all.
Golf Fashion Show
Ladies Social Event – Golf Clothes Fashions – March 22nd 2011
The Ladies’ Section’s final social event of the winter season took the form of a fashion show.
The clothes were supplied by Darren Cochrane of Esporta. Four of our own ladies, Olive Spicer, Molly Donohoe, Ina Cameron & Helen Kinsella took to the floor to model the clothes for us. The clothes: shirts, shorts, trousers, sweaters, gloves and shoes were on sale at a generous discount which will continue to be given to
Bearsden Lady Members in perpetuity! (That’s what the man said!) Also on display and for sale was
handmade jewellery by Lesley Reid - Carla Barla Beads.
We started the evening with a good browse of the items on display and then, with our resident musician,
Irene McLennan on the keyboard, playing tunes such as ‘isn’t she lovely’ the show began. As the models strutted their stuff the audience wanted all the details of the clothes they were wearing – in particular the prices which brought many intakes of breath!
They all looked very professional as they walked around the tables stopping to let the audience feel the quality and have a closer look.
Pictures taken, coffee and cake consumed and a good chat enjoyed it was time to draw the raffle and have the vote of thanks and
off home with the purchases and high hopes of warm summer days to sport the clothes on the course.
