The Skyform Trophy
Bearsden win the Skyform Trophy!
In the recent 2011 edition of the Skyform Trophy, Bearsden beat Milgngavie 2½ to 1½ last Sunday.
Our team was captained by Allan McDonald with Stevie and Craig Littlejohn, George Fotheringham, James Conlon, Mick McHugh, Martin Hughes, Andy Anderson all representing Bearsden.
Please note the absence of any "ringers"!!!
Bearsden, the home team, won comfortably with Mick McHugh sealing victory with a 10 foot putt on the 18th green. Allan thanked Milngavie for turning up and making a game of it, but with home advantage Bearsden were too strong for the visitors. Eddie McLeod, the Milngavie Captain congratulated Bearsden on their win and promised too make team changes for next year, as his team were
not strong enough to handle the experienced home team.
Allan also thanked Madeleine and her team for providing a lovely pre match tea/coffee and bacon roll and a two course meal after the match.
Match report by George Fotheringham (the winners always write the history books!)
John Wotton the inaugural winner of the Bob Semple Seniors Trophy
John Wotton wins the 2011 Bob Semple Seniors Trophy
The Final of the Bob Semple Seniors Trophy was held on Friday 7th October, with John Wotton the victor after a hard fought final round against Bob Semple.
2011 is the inaugural year of the Bob Semple Seniors Trophy, and appropriately enough Bob himself had reached the Final to play against John.
Three down at one stage earlier on, Bob rallied to take the match the distance, and just a 2 hole win for John, who had set up the victory with seven single putts in the opening 9 holes!
As we see here, this new trophy is in the form of a solid brass oval plate, topping a mahogany plinth. On the highly polished face of the brass plate is an etched figure showing a gentleman golfer of a certain (or do we mean uncertain?) age, using his putter as a walking stick, carrying a light pencil golf bag. Any resemblance to any senior golfer past or present is entirely deliberate!
The etching is taken from an original drawing by Jack Gillies, one of our members and a very talented artist.
This new competition has proved to be very popular with our senior members, and hopefully will go from strength to strength in the future.
Thanks go to Bob for presenting the trophy and seeing its unique creation through to completion.
Cameron Kirkwood wins the Johnstone Cup
After a weekend of two halves weather-wise - a sunny Saturday followed by a cool, slightly damp and windy Sunday - Cameron Kirkwood has won the Johnstone Cup, the premier scratch strokeplay competition of the year for Gentlemen members, and which is also the qualifying competition for the Gent's Championship, the Scott Hardie Trophy, next week.
You can see the draw for the Scott Hardie Trophy by clicking here.
Cameron won in a playoff against his close friend Ewen Ferguson with a 37th hole eagle two, after they had finished level on 3 over par after 36 holes. Bearsden Golf Club has known for a long time it has some exceptional Junior talent, and here we have two 15 year-olds fighting out - in the most sporting possible sense - one of our premier Club Gents' competitions. We see them here on the left, on the deciding 37th green afterwards, still the best of pals.
This follows Cameron's win in the Junior Johnstone Cup last week, which included his round of 66, 2 under par.
A little drizzle at the end of the day wasn't enough to dampen the spirits as Cameron (and many Club members) celebrated his success.
Here we see on the right the final group on the Sunday afternoon with Starter Pat Buchanan who did an excellent job keeping the competition running to time. Watch out Ivor Robson! Craig Hughes, Ewen Ferguson and John Brown Jnr are just about to tee off.
You can see all the results by clicking here. Each day's scratch results can also be seen by clicking here.
Although the Johnstone Cup is a scratch competition, there were not only the scratch winners each day, but also the net handicap winners. You can see the results in net handicap order by clicking here.
The sunny weather on Saturday had also brought out quite a few spectators, including
Walter Dobbin and his labradoodle puppy, Alfie. Alfie must have wondered what it's all about - to coin a phrase! Madeleine, our head chef, laid on mid-round drinks and BBQ burgers, ably supervised by Marco and Megan here.
The weekend, especially during the sunny Saturday weather, had its silly side too, sartorially speaking, as we can see below!
There were - in order of silliness - Paul Semple (Austin Powers to his friends) with his psychedelic purple trousers (only just preferable to the possible scene without trousers); John Brown in matching purple twin-set; and David Fabiani in rodeo hat.
Strangely, they all gave up these eye-catching accessories for the Sunday round, as things got more serious - or maybe it was just the weather.

The whole competition ran very smoothly (especially on those very fast greens!) and was a credit to the Match Committee, led by Paul Donnelly, and John Brown, head greenkeeper.
Congratulations to Cameron and our other winners. John Brown Jnr had two excellent net rounds of 64 to lead the aggregate net scores for the weekend, and Ewen's Saturday 67 and Paul Semple's Sunday 69 were the leading scratch scores on each day. Adam Davidson and Paul Donnelly also had net 64's on the Sunday round.
We now look forward to a week of ties in the various championships culminating in Finals day next Saturday, August 6th.
Prizegiving Dinner
The very successful Gents' Prizegiving dinner was held recently, at which all prizewinners from the 2010 season received their awards, trophies and other prizes.
70 or more members were there to see over 30 winners of the various competitions. The array of cups and trophies on offer can be seen here, at the evening's top table.
Len Murray, the renowned after dinner speaker, delivered a highly entertaining speech afterwards, and the evening was a great success for the Club.
