Ewen wins the IJGT major
Here is the report on Ewen's latest triumph!
He wins the International Junior Golf Tour Major at Palmetto Dunes
Ferguson blows away competition to take Boys 15-19 Division
Vilips wins Boys 14 & Under in playoff, Whaley secures Girls’ championship
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) concluded the Major Championship at Palmetto Dunes on a gorgeous Veteran’s Day weekend. The Southeast Region Event took place on Nov. 9-10, 2013 and was held on the intricately-designed, yet challenging, par-70 George Fazio course at the Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort. It was a stacked field, with more than 90 players from 21 states and 18 countries competing for National Rankings and Double IJGT Merit Points. There were countless memorable shots and even a division playoff to keep the many spectators and family members entertained throughout.
In the Boys 15-19 Division, Ewen Ferguson of Glasgow, Scotland, became a first-time IJGT Major Champion with a spectacular performance. He posted a final score of 69-67–136 through two rounds to take home the trophy by a convincing seven strokes. He also earned the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award for his 3-under-par 67 performance on the final day. After carding a first-round 1-under-par 69, Ferguson came out strong during the final round, making par on seven of his first eight holes before sinking a birdie on the par-4 No. 9. He followed an even-par 35 front nine with a bogey-free back nine, posting three birdies on Nos. 13, 17 and 18. He totaled 13 pars on the day, and turned in a scorching 3-under-par performance on the course’s par-4s.
When asked about whether he felt any pressure holding onto his four-stroke lead going into the final round, Ferguson stated, “I think I thrive off pressure…I enjoy it. So, I just try and have fun and shoot a low score.” He did just that, securing the only under-par performance of the tournament.
This was the second event of the season for Ferguson, who recently came in second at the IJGT Island Open at Palmetto Hall on Nov. 2-3, 2013. In three seasons playing on the IJGT, Ferguson has secured victories in two events, and notched second place finishes in his remaining three events.
Rounding out the top three in the Boys 15-19 Division were Tennoshin Ogawa of Ichinomiya-shi, Japan, and Matt Cheng of Taipei, Taiwan, who finished second and third, respectively. Ogawa posted a 73-70–143, while Cheng carded a 76-71–147.

Ewen wins the Boys' British Amateur Championship!
Ewen Ferguson has today won the final of the Boys Amateur Championship 10&9 at Hoylake! Unbelievable! - well, not really, we've all seen him play! But against full international opposition it's remarkable. Watch this space for more about Ewen's arrival back at the Club...
Those of us who have been following the Boys' British Amateur Championship at Hoylake will have been sipping our beer nervously today as Bearsden's own Ewen Ferguson won the final of the Championship. Up on the TV at the Club, members were watching initially nervously and then with increasing confidence! Bearsden has had a very strong Junior section for some years now, currently with Ewen and Cameron Kirkwood and many others flying the Bearsden flag, and before them with Richard Docherty, also mentioned proudly often in these pages.
The 87th Boys Amateur Championship took place from 13-18 July at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) and Wallasey golf clubs with a field comprising 252 players. The stroke play stage of The Boys Amateur Championship is played over the first two days of competition at both courses before the field is cut to 64 and ties. The match play stage is played over the final four days at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake).
In his semi-final, Ewen ran out a convincing winner 4&3 over Paul Elissalde of France yesterday, and played Germany's Michael Hirmer in the final today.
All the news of the event is on the R&A website and you can see live scores by clicking here. By 3pm on Sunday, Ewen had won 10&9 after being 4 up after the morning round. Keep in touch also on our FaceBook page.
The list of previous winners can be seen by clicking here - Ewen's in pretty good company!
You can see more of some of Ewen's exploits in articles on our own pages by clicking here, and he he has his own website at http://www.ewenferguson.com
Ewen wins the Munster Boys Open Amateur Championship
I published an article about Ewen Ferguson with his trophy for winning the Golf Union of Ireland's Munster Boys Open Amateur championship last week.
I have added a few more details for you now.
With an aggregate score of 1 under par, Ewen led the field by 6 strokes. Top scores were as follows:
287 E Ferguson (Bearsden) 75 68 71 73
293 D Whitty (Faithlegg) 76 70 71 76
294 J Walsh (Castle) 75 73 73 73
In the smaller picture is Ewen receiving the trophy from GUI Chairman L. Martin and the representative of the sponsors, Gleeson Sports.
You can see a list of previous winners by clicking here. A certain R. Rafferty seems to have done quite well in this competiton in the late 70s:-
1978 at Killarney; winner, B. McDaid, Skibbereen; runner-up R. Rafferty, Warrenpoint, at the 20th hole
1979 at Tramore; winner, R. Rafferty, Warrenpoint; runner-up N. Anderson, Shandon Park, by 2/1
and there are several other household names in the list. The competition became strokeplay in 1999.
Please note that the online diary is available by clicking here, so please check it for any updates in addition to your printed diary when planning your golf.
We have a private booking in the diary for Saturday evening 23rd July from 7.30pm with the restaurant area in use from 7pm or so.
Richard Docherty flying the flag for Bearsden
Richard Docherty is one of the stars of our Club.
The current Club Champion, winner of the Scott Hardie Trophy and the Johnstone Cup last year, Richard attends University at Linden Wood College in St Louis, Missouri, USA, studying for his Sports Management degree course.
Richard was also a finalist - the final yet to be played as both finalists had to fly back to the US for their studies before a delayed final could be played - in the DGU County Championship. Hopefully we will have the chance to support him when it is played this year.
Richard has already won three competitions in the USA. Having only just turned eighteen, and of course only recently graduated from being a Club Junior, we can only expect he will get better and better! Well done, Richard.
The Ewen and Cameron Show comes home
This week, Ewen Ferguson and Cameron Kirkwood have been setting the heather alight home here in Scotland, at the Stephen Gallacher Foundation Scottish Boys Stroke Play Championship at Cardross.
They repeated their excellent placings at the EGU Championship (see below) coming second and tenth respectively up against a field of 140 players this week in the U18 championship, for which Ewen won the silver medal. It was another impressive performance from Ewen, who outlined his emerging credentials with four birdies in his final nine holes.
Even better, Ewen took top prize and the Trophy (seen here) in the U16 championship for his performance, with Cameron taking second place in that competition.
This was an international competition with players from Italy, Finland, France, Ireland and several other countries. I didn't see many clubs with two players so highly placed!
Observers are beginning to wonder what we have in the water at Bearsden (and there is certainly plenty of water!!)
There's no diminishing the fantastic achievements of these two boys, gained purely as a result of their talent, enthusiasm, hard work and dedication, and they deserve every congratulation they get. The top ten results were:
1 MARCHBANK, Greig Dumfries & County 70 67 73 67 -7
2 FERGUSON, Ewen (U16) Bearsden 70 71 70 70 -3
T3 FARRELL, Cameron Cardross 74 69 71 68 -2
T3 SCOTT, Ewan St Andrews 67 73 73 69 -2

T6 CARRICK, Angus Douglas Park 70 75 72 69 +2
T6 HOWIE, Craig Peebles 72 75 69 70 +2
T6 CHALMERS, Craig Lenzie 73 69 73 71 +2
T6 SAVAGE, Jamie Cawder 72 71 71 72 +2

Well done Ewen and Cameron!!
Bearsden's Junior team at the DGU Team Final
At the end of a very exciting home match against Windyhill, towards the end of last season, our Junior Team managed to win 4-2 to get through to the Final of the Dumbartonshire Junior Team Championships.
The final itself was postponed owing to bad weather, and was played on 23rd May at 8.30AM.
Pictured here are the team and team management (top) and some individual members of our team in their new team kit, kindly sponsored by Nexus Packaging and Merkland Tank. In the match, Ewen Ferguson and Cameron Kirkwood (both at left) won their singles matches, and Kane Forrester / Bryan Brown halved their foursome match, unlucky not to win it on the 18th.
So after a very spirited performance, our team narrowly lost 2½ - 3½ to Douglas Park.
Ewen Ferguson at the 2010/11 DGU awards
Bearsden's Ewen Ferguson took major awards at the Dunbartonshire Golf Union prize-giving dinner recently for his outstanding performances last season in DGU competitions, as well as recognition of his overall performances locally, regionally and nationally.
Ewen, seen here with his good friend Cameron Farrell, collected the Boys' Matchplay Champion's Trophy, and possible even more impressively took the Young Player of the Year award together with the Bob Jenkins Memorial Trophy.
Proud dads Mark Ferguson and Robert Farrell proudly looked on as Cameron also collected his awards as the Boys' Medal Play Champion and for the Boys' Order of Merit. Here they are all showing their deserved pride in their performances.
Bearsden's Gavin Gough was also a DGU winner, with the Spring Meeting Handicap Medal.
Richard Docherty wins the Dunbartonshire Championship
Club champion Richard Docherty became the Dumbartonshire Match-Play Champion tonight at Windyhill beating Richard Graham of Hayston Golf Club by 3 and 2 in the final.
The final was originally scheduled for last August but had to be postponed because of bad weather and the subsequent return of the finalists to their universities in the United States. In a keenly contested match, Richard won the first two holes with birdies and was always in command against his highly rated opponent.
Well done Richard on securing your most important win to date.
Helen Faulds and Lynn McColl keep Bearsden in the news
Our Club Champion, Helen Faulds has continued to do well on the Scottish scene.
In the Dunbartonshire and Argyll County Championships she was a semi-finalist and won the West Division Veterans' Championship in June and reached the quarter-finals in the Senior Women's Championship. She also played for the Scottish Vets team against England at Bath when Scotland retained the Miller Stirling Salver. She came second in the Scottish Foursomes and won the scratch prize. She has been appointed Scottish Vets Vice-Captain. Helen has won three club championships this season at Elie and Douglas Park as well as at Bearsden.
Lynn McColl, the runner-up in the Club Championship, has also had a very successful year. She equalled the course record, scoring a gross 74. Also Lynn won the 1st Silver and Coronation Medal in the County.
County and national recognition for BGC Juniors
Three of our successful Junior squad have been recognised at National and County level over the last year.
Ewen Ferguson, winner of the Club Junior Championship last year has won a place in the SGU Academy which offers him exposure to playing and training help to bring his game on even faster!
And Ewen, together with Cameron Kirkwood and Bradley Kelly, also prominent in Junior competitions in recent years at BGC, are now part of the Dunbartonshire Golf Union squad.
Our Junior membership as a whole have been an important and thriving part of the Bearsden Golf Club scene for some years now, for example winning promotion in 2008 in the McCarry League.
It is great encouragement for us all to see this recognition for our Juniors in the wider scene of golf in Scotland.
